Technique 4: Basic Shadow
Same as gradient, projection is also widely adopted in web design. When it is correctly used, projection can indeed enhance the depth and texture. The key for success is not to overuse or misuse.
The depth of projection depends on the direction and the strength of the light, also the distance between object layer and shadow layer. The stronger the light, the shaper and darker the shadow; in the same way, the weaker the light, the softer and lighter the shadow.
Examples on the Web:
LinkedIn: Adding subtle shadow to the bottom of the column, creating a feeling of depth.
Google: Maybe one of the hardest web page design on the Internet, but still the search engine uses light shadow.
