Technique 2: Gradient

In the real world, everything has tone, because light is attached on all things. Gradient then becomes a good solution for creating depth and realism.

The key is not to overuse gradient. In Photoshop, adding a layer specifically for gradient, will ensure the graphic not to be distorted when gradient changes.

Example from the web:

nclud: Use subtle but effective gradient to distinguish the different components.

CSS Ninjas: The colours seems flat at a glance, but there are actually subtle changes in different areas, so to create an charming material effect.
